If you’ve ever been inside Scott Library, you would have (hopefully) visited the Learning Commons on the second floor. If you haven’t, you should. Why? Just because it’s awesome. Anyway, not the point. Inside the Commons, there are a few artworks in the form of a visual written sign (maybe you Fine Arts majors can help me out with the real name; typography?) that happened to catch my eye. Some of the messages were undeniably positive, others were questionable and a few sounded so discouraging that you would wonder what they were doing in a place of learning in the first place (and then you think about it, and realize that the artistic intention was most likely oppositional). The one that struck me as the most telling for future students was: “THE TIME IS NOW.” And the artist has got a point: the time for applying to York is now, the time for applying to residence is now, the time to following our passions and dreams is now, the time to change our GPAs for the better is now; point well-taken.
